How to use this calculator

Enter mass and volume to get density and specific gravity, or enter density to find mass or volume.

The formula

ρ = m ÷ V

Worked example

A 1-litre block of steel has a mass of 7.85 kg:

ρ = 7.85 kg ÷ 0.001 m³ = 7,850 kg/m³ (specific gravity 7.85)

Common densities

Material kg/m³
Air (20 °C) 1.2
Wood (pine) 500
Ice 917
Water 998
Concrete 2,400
Aluminium 2,700
Steel 7,850
Copper 8,960
Gold 19,300

Frequently asked questions

What is the density formula?

Density = mass ÷ volume. Its SI unit is kg/m³; 1 g/cm³ = 1,000 kg/m³.

What is specific gravity?

Density relative to water (about 1,000 kg/m³). Steel has a specific gravity of about 7.85.

Will it float?

In water, objects with specific gravity below 1 float and those above 1 sink.
