How to use this calculator

Enter your numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines. The mean, median, mode and range update as you type.

Definitions

  • Mean = sum ÷ count
  • Median = middle value of the sorted list (average of the two middle values if the count is even)
  • Mode = the value that appears most often
  • Range = maximum − minimum

Worked example

Data: 3, 7, 7, 2, 9, 7, 4, 5, 2 → sorted: 2, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 7, 7, 9

  • Mean = 46 ÷ 9 = 5.111
  • Median = 5
  • Mode = 7 (appears 3 times)
  • Range = 9 − 2 = 7

When to use each

  • Mean — symmetric data without extreme values.
  • Median — skewed data such as incomes or house prices.
  • Mode — categories or the most popular choice (sizes, ratings).

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between mean, median and mode?

The mean is the arithmetic average, the median is the middle value when sorted, and the mode is the most frequent value.

What if no number repeats?

Then there is no mode. The calculator shows the count as 1 to indicate every value appears once.

What if two values are equally common?

The data is bimodal. The calculator shows the smaller of the most frequent values.
