Million, lakh and crore: the two numbering systems
The international system groups digits in threes (thousand, million, billion). The Indian system groups the first three digits, then pairs (thousand, lakh, crore). The same number therefore gets commas in different places:
| Number | International | Indian |
|---|---|---|
| 1,00,000 | 100 thousand | 1 lakh |
| 10,00,000 | 1 million | 10 lakh |
| 1,00,00,000 | 10 million | 1 crore |
| 1,00,00,00,000 | 1 billion | 100 crore |
Formulas
millions = number ÷ 1,000,000
lakhs = number ÷ 100,000
crores = number ÷ 10,000,000
Quick mental shortcuts:
- Million → lakh: multiply by 10 (3.2 million = 32 lakh).
- Crore → million: multiply by 10 (4.5 crore = 45 million).
- Billion → crore: multiply by 100 (1.2 billion = 120 crore).
Worked example
A company reports revenue of ₹ 845 crore. In international terms:
845 crore × 10,000,000 = 8,450,000,000 → 8.45 billion, or 8,450 million.
Where this conversion matters
