How to use this calculator
Enter your monthly electricity use (from your bill) and your grid emission factor. Monthly and yearly CO₂ are calculated.
Example
300 kWh a month at 0.7 kg/kWh → 210 kg per month, 2.5 t per year.
Approximate grid factors (recent years)
| Grid | kg CO₂ per kWh |
|---|---|
| India | ~0.7 |
| World average | ~0.45–0.5 |
| United States | ~0.35–0.4 |
| United Kingdom | ~0.2 |
| France | ~0.05 |
Factors change every year as grids decarbonise — check your national energy agency for the latest value.
Frequently asked questions
What is a grid emission factor?
The average CO₂ released per kWh of electricity generated in a region. It depends on how much coal, gas, nuclear and renewable power is used.
What factor should I use?
Use your utility's or national figure. Coal-heavy grids are around 0.7–0.9 kg/kWh; grids with lots of renewables or nuclear can be below 0.1.
Does rooftop solar count as zero?
Solar electricity has very low operating emissions, so exported or self-used solar reduces your grid footprint.
