How to use this calculator

Enter the pond’s length, width, maximum depth and the overlap you want around the edge. The liner size and approximate volume are calculated.

Example

A 3 × 2 m pond, 0.6 m deep, 0.3 m overlap:

  • Liner = 4.8 × 3.8 m
  • Volume ≈ 2,160 litres

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate pond liner size?

Liner length = pond length + 2 × depth + 2 × overlap; liner width = pond width + 2 × depth + 2 × overlap.

Why multiply volume by 0.6?

Ponds have sloping sides and shelves, so they hold less than a rectangular box. 0.5–0.7 is a typical factor.

How deep should a wildlife pond be?

Include shallow edges for wildlife and a deeper zone of about 60 cm so part of the pond stays ice-free in winter.
