How to use this calculator

Formulas
Gross WPM = (characters ÷ 5) ÷ minutes
Net WPM = gross WPM − errors ÷ minutes
Example
1,250 characters in 5 minutes with 5 errors:
- Gross = 250 words ÷ 5 = 50 WPM
- Net = 50 − 1 = 49 WPM

Frequently asked questions
How is WPM calculated?
By convention, one "word" is 5 characters including spaces. WPM = characters ÷ 5 ÷ minutes.
What is net WPM?
Gross WPM minus uncorrected errors per minute — a fairer measure of useful speed.
What is a good typing speed?
About 40 WPM is average; 60–70 WPM is good for office work; professional typists exceed 80 WPM.
