Discount Calculator
How to use this calculator
Enter the original price and the discount % to see the sale price and how much you save. It also works backwards:
- Know the original and sale prices? Press × on Discount and type the sale price to find the real percentage off.
- Know the sale price and discount? Press × on Original price to find what it used to cost.
The formula
sale price = price × (1 − discount) saving = price − sale price
Worked example
A jacket costs 80 with 25% off:
- Saving = 80 × 0.25 = 20
- Sale price = 80 − 20 = 60
Stacked discounts
Shops sometimes offer “an extra 20% off sale prices”. Discounts multiply rather than add:
| Offer | Real total discount |
|---|---|
| 20% + 20% | 36% |
| 30% + 10% | 37% |
| 50% + 20% | 60% |
To check a stacked offer, apply the first discount, then put the result into the Original price field and apply the second.
Discount vs markup
A 25% discount on 80 gives 60, but marking 60 back up by 25% only gives 75. Use the profit margin calculator for markups.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate a discount?
Multiply the price by the discount as a decimal to get the saving, then subtract it. 25% off 80 saves 20, so you pay 60.
How do I find the discount percentage from the sale price?
Discount = (original − sale) ÷ original. Press × on Discount and type the sale price.
Are two discounts of 20% the same as 40% off?
No. 20% off and then another 20% off is 36% off in total, because the second discount applies to the already-reduced price.
