Hourly to salary formulas

Weekly = hourly × hours per week
Annual = weekly × weeks per year Monthly = annual ÷ 12

Worked example

25 per hour, 40 hours a week, 52 weeks:

  • Weekly = 25 × 40 = 1,000
  • Annual = 1,000 × 52 = 52,000
  • Monthly = 4,333.33

Quick table (40 h/week, 52 weeks = 2,080 hours)

Hourly Annual
15 31,200
20 41,600
25 52,000
30 62,400
50 104,000

A quick mental rule: annual ≈ hourly × 2,000.

Hours per week compared

Hourly rate 37.5 h × 52 wk 40 h × 52 wk 40 h × 50 wk

20 39,000 41,600 40,000

75 146,250 156,000 150,000

Salary to hourly for contractors

If you switch from a salaried job to contracting, do not just divide your old salary by 2,080 hours. A salary comes with paid leave, holidays and benefits that a contractor must cover:

  • Unpaid time off: holidays and sick days, often 4–6 weeks a year.
  • Non-billable hours: admin, sales and training, often 20–30% of working time.
  • Benefits and taxes: health insurance, pension contributions and employer-side taxes.

A common rule of thumb is that a contract rate needs to be 1.5 to 2 times the equivalent salaried hourly rate to give the same income.

Overtime

Many jobs pay overtime at 1.5× the normal rate above 40 hours a week. To include it, work out the overtime pay separately:

Weekly pay = rate × 40 + rate × 1.5 × overtime hours

At 25 an hour with 5 hours of overtime, that is 1,000 + 187.50 = 1,187.50 a week.

Gross vs take-home pay

The results are gross pay, before income tax, social security and other deductions. Take-home pay is usually 15–35% lower depending on your country, income and tax choices.

Remember

These are gross (before-tax) figures. Overtime, bonuses and benefits are not included.
