SIP Calculator (Monthly Investment)
Future value vs Investment period (years) — other inputs held at your current values.
How to use this calculator
Enter your monthly investment, expected annual return and period. You see the future value, the total you put in and the returns earned. To plan for a goal, press × on Monthly investment and type the target amount.
The formula
FV = M × [((1 + i)n − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i)
- i = annual return ÷ 12
- n = years × 12
- The extra (1 + i) assumes you invest at the start of each month, as with most SIPs.
Worked example
5,000 per month at 12% a year for 10 years:
- Total invested = 5,000 × 120 = 600,000
- Future value = 1,161,695
- Returns earned = 561,695
The power of time
At 5,000 per month and 12%:
| Years | Invested | Future value |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | 300,000 | 412,432 |
| 10 | 600,000 | 1,161,695 |
| 15 | 900,000 | 2,522,880 |
| 20 | 1,200,000 | 4,995,740 |
| 25 | 1,500,000 | 9,488,175 |
Doubling the time from 10 to 20 years doubles what you put in but more than quadruples the result. Starting early matters more than investing a lot.
Keep in mind
- Returns are not guaranteed and markets can fall.
- Adjust the target for inflation with the inflation calculator.
- Fund expenses and taxes reduce the final amount.
Frequently asked questions
What is a SIP?
A Systematic Investment Plan — investing a fixed amount every month, usually into a mutual fund. It builds discipline and averages out market ups and downs.
How is SIP maturity calculated?
FV = M × [((1 + i)ⁿ − 1) ÷ i] × (1 + i), where M is the monthly amount, i the monthly rate (annual ÷ 12) and n the number of months.
Are SIP returns guaranteed?
No. Equity fund returns vary from year to year. The calculator assumes a steady average return, so treat the result as an estimate.
How much should I invest monthly to reach a goal?
Press × on Monthly investment, then type your target future value.
