PPF Calculator (Public Provident Fund)
The Public Provident Fund is a 15-year, government-backed savings scheme in India with tax-free interest and maturity. This free PPF calculator solves for whichever value you leave blank and shows the formula and steps.
Maturity value vs Duration (years) — other inputs held at your current values.
How to use the PPF calculator
Enter the amount you will deposit each financial year, the interest rate (currently 7.1%) and the duration (15 years, or 20, 25 or 30 with extensions). The calculator shows the maturity value, the total you deposited and the interest earned.
To find the yearly deposit needed for a goal, press × on Yearly deposit and type the maturity value you want.
The PPF formula
F = P × [((1 + r)n − 1) ÷ r] × (1 + r)
- P = yearly deposit
- r = annual interest rate (7.1% = 0.071)
- n = number of years
The formula assumes you deposit at the start of each financial year (by 5 April), so every deposit earns a full year of interest. Interest is compounded once a year, on 31 March.
Worked example
₹1,50,000 every year for 15 years at 7.1%:
- Total deposited = 1,50,000 × 15 = ₹22,50,000
- Maturity value = ₹40,68,209
- Interest earned = ₹18,18,209 (tax-free)
Maturity for different deposits (15 years, 7.1%)
| Yearly deposit | Total deposited | Maturity value | Interest |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹12,000 | ₹1,80,000 | ₹3,25,457 | ₹1,45,457 |
| ₹50,000 | ₹7,50,000 | ₹13,56,070 | ₹6,06,070 |
| ₹1,00,000 | ₹15,00,000 | ₹27,12,139 | ₹12,12,139 |
| ₹1,50,000 | ₹22,50,000 | ₹40,68,209 | ₹18,18,209 |
The power of extending
Depositing ₹1.5 lakh a year at 7.1%:
| Duration | Total deposited | Maturity value |
|---|---|---|
| 15 years | ₹22,50,000 | ₹40,68,209 |
| 20 years | ₹30,00,000 | ₹66,58,288 |
| 25 years | ₹37,50,000 | ₹1,03,08,015 |
| 30 years | ₹45,00,000 | ₹1,54,50,911 |
The last 15 years of a 30-year PPF earn far more than the first 15. If you do not need the money at maturity, extending is one of the best risk-free, tax-free options.

Frequently asked questions
What is the current PPF interest rate?
7.1% a year, compounded annually, for the October–December 2026 quarter. The government reviews small savings rates every quarter.
What will ₹1.5 lakh a year in PPF become in 15 years?
At 7.1% it grows to about ₹40,68,209. You deposit ₹22,50,000 and earn about ₹18,18,209 in interest, all tax-free.
What is the PPF lock-in period?
15 full financial years from the end of the year you open it. Partial withdrawals are allowed from the 7th year and loans from the 3rd to 6th year.
Is PPF interest taxable?
No. PPF has EEE status — deposits qualify for deduction under the old regime (up to ₹1.5 lakh), and interest and maturity are tax-free.
When should I deposit to earn the most interest?
Before the 5th of the month. Interest is calculated on the lowest balance between the 5th and the end of each month, so a deposit by 5 April earns interest for the full year.
Can I extend PPF after 15 years?
Yes, in blocks of 5 years, with or without further deposits. Set Duration to 20, 25 or 30 years to see the effect.
