SWP Calculator (Systematic Withdrawal Plan)
A Systematic Withdrawal Plan pays out a fixed amount from a mutual fund every month while the rest stays invested. This free SWP calculator solves for whichever value you leave blank and shows the formula and steps.
Balance at the end vs Time period (years) — other inputs held at your current values.
How to use the SWP calculator
Enter your corpus, the monthly withdrawal you want, the expected return and the period. The calculator shows the balance left at the end and the total you will have withdrawn.
To see how long the money lasts, type 0 in Balance at the end and press × on Time period. To find a sustainable withdrawal, set the balance you want to leave and press × on Monthly withdrawal.
SWP formula
B = P × (1 + i)n − W × [((1 + i)n − 1) ÷ i]
- P = starting corpus
- W = monthly withdrawal
- i = monthly return = annual return ÷ 12
- n = number of months
The first term is what the corpus would grow to with no withdrawals. The second is the future value of everything you withdrew.
Worked example
₹50,00,000 corpus, ₹30,000 a month, 8% return, 15 years:
- Total withdrawn = 30,000 × 180 = ₹54,00,000
- Balance after 15 years = ₹61,53,461
Because ₹30,000 is less than the monthly return on ₹50 lakh at 8% (about ₹33,333), the corpus actually grows.
How long does ₹50 lakh last at 8%?
| Monthly withdrawal | Per year | Money lasts |
|---|---|---|
| ₹25,000 | ₹3,00,000 | forever |
| ₹35,000 | ₹4,20,000 | 38.2 years |
| ₹45,000 | ₹5,40,000 | 16.9 years |
| ₹55,000 | ₹6,60,000 | 11.7 years |
SWP vs FD interest vs annuity
| SWP | FD interest | Annuity | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Income | You choose | Depends on rate | Fixed for life |
| Capital | Stays yours | Stays yours | Given up |
| Tax | Only on gains | Full interest at slab rate | Full annuity at slab rate |
| Risk | Market-linked | Low | Low |
Keep in mind
- Market returns are not steady. A fall in the early years of withdrawal hurts more than a fall later. Keep 1–2 years of withdrawals in a liquid or debt fund.
- Raise the withdrawal only gradually for inflation.
- Exit loads may apply to withdrawals made soon after investing.
Frequently asked questions
What is SWP?
A Systematic Withdrawal Plan lets you withdraw a fixed amount from a mutual fund every month while the rest stays invested and keeps earning.
How long will my money last?
Set Balance at the end to 0, then press × on Time period. With ₹50 lakh, ₹45,000 a month and an 8% return, the money lasts about 16.9 years. If you withdraw less than the monthly return, it never runs out.
What is a safe withdrawal rate?
If you withdraw less than the monthly return, the corpus never runs out. At 8% that is about 0.64% of the corpus a month — ₹32,000 on ₹50 lakh — though returns vary.
How is SWP taxed?
Each withdrawal is partly your own capital and partly gains. Only the gain portion is taxed as capital gains, which often makes SWP more tax-efficient than FD interest.
