How to use this calculator
Choose a location, then enter a mass. You get the weight in newtons (or lbf) and what an Earth-calibrated bathroom scale would show there.
The formula
W = m × g
Worked example (70 kg person)
| Location | Weight (N) | Scale reading |
|---|---|---|
| Earth | 686 | 70 kg |
| Moon | 113 | 11.6 kg |
| Mars | 260 | 26.5 kg |
| Jupiter | 1735 | 177.0 kg |
Gravity on Earth varies slightly
Standard gravity is 9.80665 m/s², but the real value ranges from about 9.78 at the equator to 9.83 at the poles — a difference of about 0.5% in your weight.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between mass and weight?
Mass is the amount of matter (kg) and is the same everywhere. Weight is the force of gravity on that mass (newtons), and changes from planet to planet.
How much would I weigh on the Moon?
About one-sixth of your Earth weight. A 70 kg person would read about 11.6 kg on an Earth-calibrated scale.
Why do scales show kilograms?
Bathroom scales measure force but are calibrated for Earth's gravity, so they display mass directly.
