How to use this calculator

Enter your cadence, chainring and cog teeth and choose your wheel size. The gear ratio, development and speed are calculated.

Formula

speed = cadence × (chainring ÷ cog) × wheel circumference

Example

50 × 15 gear, 700×25c wheel, 90 rpm:

  • Ratio = 3.33
  • Development = 7.02 m
  • Speed = 37.9 km/h

Frequently asked questions

How is cycling speed calculated from cadence?

Speed = cadence × (chainring ÷ cog) × wheel circumference.

What is a good cadence?

Many riders spin at 80–95 rpm on flat roads; climbing is often slower.

What is gear development?

The distance the bike travels for one full turn of the pedals.
