Ideal Weight Calculator
Ideal weight formulas estimate a healthy body weight from height and sex. They are a starting point rather than a strict target.
Ideal weight (Devine) (kg) vs Height (cm) — other inputs held at your current values.
How to use the ideal weight calculator
Choose your sex and enter your height. You get the Devine ideal weight and the healthy weight range based on BMI 18.5–24.9. Height can be entered in cm, m, inches or feet; weights display in kg or lb.
Ideal weight formulas
Men: 50 kg + 2.3 kg × (inches over 60)
Women: 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg × (inches over 60)
The healthy range comes from the BMI formula, weight = BMI × height (m)².
Worked example
A man 180 cm tall (70.87 inches):
- Devine ideal weight = 50 + 2.3 × 10.87 = 75.0 kg (165 lb)
- Healthy BMI range = 18.5 × 1.8² to 24.9 × 1.8² = 59.9 – 80.7 kg
A woman 165 cm tall: Devine ideal weight = 56.9 kg.
Other formulas
| Formula (year) | Men | Women |
|---|---|---|
| Devine (1974) | 50 + 2.3/in | 45.5 + 2.3/in |
| Robinson (1983) | 52 + 1.9/in | 49 + 1.7/in |
| Miller (1983) | 56.2 + 1.41/in | 53.1 + 1.36/in |
| Hamwi (1964) | 48 + 2.7/in | 45.5 + 2.2/in |
“/in” means kilograms per inch over 5 feet. The formulas differ by several kilograms, which shows these are rough guides, not targets.

Which formula to trust?
All four classic formulas were designed for drug dosing, not to define a perfect body weight. They give a single number, whereas real health spans a range. For personal goals, the healthy BMI range in the last column is a better guide, ideally combined with waist size.
Ideal vs adjusted body weight
Doctors sometimes use adjusted body weight for drug dosing in people with obesity:
Adjusted weight = Ideal weight + 0.4 × (Actual weight − Ideal weight)
For a man 175 cm (ideal 70.5 kg) weighing 100 kg, adjusted weight = 82.3 kg.
Frame size
Some charts adjust ideal weight for small, medium or large frames, often by about ±10%. Wrist circumference is a simple way to estimate frame: a smaller wrist for your height suggests a smaller frame.
Important
These formulas do not consider muscle mass, frame size, age or ethnicity. For Asian adults, health risks rise at a lower BMI, so the upper end of the range may be lower. Talk to a doctor before setting a weight goal.
Frequently asked questions
What is the Devine formula?
A formula from 1974 originally used to dose medicines. Men = 50 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet; women = 45.5 kg + 2.3 kg per inch over 5 feet.
Is there one perfect weight for my height?
No. A healthy weight is a range. The BMI range shown (18.5–24.9) is a broader, more useful guide than any single number.
Does this work for people under 5 feet?
The Devine formula is designed for heights of 5 feet (152.4 cm) and above. For shorter heights, use the healthy BMI range instead.
What is the ideal weight for a 5′10″ man?
About 73 kg (161 lb) by the Devine formula. The healthy BMI range for that height is about 58–79 kg.
What is the ideal weight for a 5′4″ woman?
About 55 kg (121 lb) by the Devine formula, with a healthy BMI range of about 49–66 kg.
