Decimal back to fraction

  1. Write the decimal over 1, e.g. 0.375 ÷ 1.
  2. Multiply top and bottom by 10 for each decimal place: 375 ÷ 1000.
  3. Simplify by the greatest common factor (125): 3/8.

Repeating decimals to fractions

For a repeating decimal like 0.272727…:

  • Let x = 0.2727…
  • 100x = 27.2727…
  • Subtract: 99x = 27, so x = 27/99 = 3/11

Mixed numbers

Convert 2 3/4 by dividing the fraction part and adding the whole number: 3 ÷ 4 = 0.75, so 2 3/4 = 2.75. In the calculator, enter 11 as the numerator and 4 as the denominator (2 × 4 + 3 = 11).

Terminating or repeating?

A simplified fraction gives a terminating decimal only if its denominator has no prime factors other than 2 and 5. So 3/8 and 7/20 terminate, while 1/3, 1/7 and 5/12 repeat.

Inch fractions

Imperial drawings use fractions of an inch: 3/8″ = 0.375″ = 9.525 mm. Halves, quarters, eighths and sixteenths always give exact (terminating) decimals because their denominators are powers of 2.
