How to use the dog food calorie calculator

Enter your dog’s weight, choose the life stage, and enter the food’s kcal per cup. RER, daily calories and cups per day are calculated.

Dog food calorie formulas

RER = 70 × kg0.75 MER = RER × factor

Example

A 20 kg neutered adult dog, food with 350 kcal per cup:

  • RER = 70 × 200.75 = 662 kcal
  • Daily = 662 × 1.6 = 1,059 kcal
  • About 3.0 cups per day

These are starting points — adjust based on body condition, and ask your vet for advice.

Intact adult 1.8
Inactive or obese-prone 1.2–1.4
Weight loss 1.0 (based on target weight)
Puppy under 4 months 3.0
Puppy 4 months to adult 2.0
Working dog 2–5

These are starting points from veterinary nutrition guidelines; adjust based on body condition.

Body condition score

Vets use a 9-point scale. At the ideal score (4–5), you can feel the ribs easily under a thin layer of fat and see a waist from above. Adjust food by about 10% and re-check after 2–3 weeks.

Treats count

Treats should be no more than 10% of daily calories. Subtract them from the food allowance.
