Tile Calculator (Floor & Wall)
The number of tiles depends on the floor or wall area and the tile size. Adding wastage for cuts and breakages avoids running short.
How to use the tile calculator
Enter the area dimensions, tile size, grout joint and waste allowance. The area and number of tiles are calculated.
Tile formula
Tiles = area ÷ ((tile length + joint) × (tile width + joint)) × (1 + waste)
Example
A 4 × 3 m floor with 600 × 600 mm tiles, 3 mm joints, 10% waste:
- Area = 12 m²
- Tiles = 12 ÷ (0.603 × 0.603) × 1.1 = 37 tiles
Tiles per m² for common sizes (3 mm joint)
| Tile | Tiles per m² | Tiles for 10 m² + 10% |
|---|---|---|
| 100 × 100 mm | 94.3 | 1037 |
| 200 × 200 mm | 24.3 | 267 |
| 300 × 300 mm | 10.9 | 120 |
| 300 × 600 mm | 5.5 | 61 |
| 400 × 400 mm | 6.2 | 68 |
| 600 × 600 mm | 2.8 | 31 |
| 600 × 1200 mm | 1.4 | 16 |
| 800 × 800 mm | 1.6 | 18 |
Adhesive and grout
| Material | Rough quantity |
|---|---|
| Tile adhesive (6 mm notched trowel) | 3–4 kg per m² |
| Tile adhesive (10–12 mm trowel, large tiles) | 5–6 kg per m² |
| Grout | 0.2–1 kg per m², depending on tile size and joint width |
Larger tiles with thin joints need less grout.
Wall tiles
For walls, calculate each wall separately: width × height minus windows and doors. Tiles often stop at a set height, such as 1.2 m or full height in showers.
Layout tips
- Start from the centre of the room so cut tiles at the edges are equal.
- Avoid slivers less than half a tile wide at visible edges.
- Buy all tiles from the same batch (shade and calibre) and keep a few spares for repairs.
Tiles per m² (before waste)

| 600 × 300 mm | 5.5 |
| 600 × 600 mm | 2.8 |
| 800 × 800 mm | 1.55 |
