SGPA vs CGPA

  • SGPA (semester grade point average) covers a single semester.
  • CGPA (cumulative) is the credit-weighted average of all SGPAs so far:

CGPA = Σ(SGPA × semester credits) ÷ Σ(credits)

If credits are equal each semester, CGPA is simply the average of the SGPAs.

Why CBSE used 9.5

CBSE derived 9.5 from the average percentage of students scoring in the top grade band across subjects. It applied to the CCE grading scheme; check current CBSE marksheets for how results are reported now.

Applying abroad

Universities abroad may ask for a WES or similar credential evaluation, which converts grades using its own method. Keep your official transcripts and the university’s conversion certificate.
