Vertical Jump Height Calculator (Hang Time)

Vertical jump height can be calculated from hang time — the time you spend in the air.

How to use the vertical jump height calculator

Enter your flight time (in milliseconds or seconds). Jump height and take-off speed are calculated.

Vertical jump height formula

h = g t² ÷ 8

Example

A hang time of 550 ms: h = 9.81 × 0.55² ÷ 8 = 37.1 cm.

Bending the knees on landing makes flight time look longer and overstates height — land with straight legs for accurate tests.

Hang time vs height

Hang time Jump height
400 ms 19.6 cm (7.7 in)
450 ms 24.8 cm (9.8 in)
500 ms 30.6 cm (12.1 in)
550 ms 37.1 cm (14.6 in)
600 ms 44.1 cm (17.4 in)
650 ms 51.8 cm (20.4 in)
700 ms 60.1 cm (23.6 in)
800 ms 78.5 cm (30.9 in)
900 ms 99.3 cm (39.1 in)

Vertical jump benchmarks

Group Typical countermovement jump
Untrained adult 30–45 cm
Recreational athlete 40–55 cm
Trained athlete (team sports) 55–70 cm
Elite basketball / volleyball 70–90+ cm

Measuring hang time

Phone apps can measure flight time from slow-motion video: count frames from take-off to landing and divide by the frame rate. At 240 fps, 132 frames = 550 ms.

Errors to avoid

The formula assumes you land in the same body position you took off from. Tucking the legs or landing with bent knees lengthens the flight time and overestimates height.

Power from jump height

The Sayers equation estimates peak power: P (W) = 60.7 × jump height (cm) + 45.3 × body mass (kg) − 2,055.

Frequently asked questions

How is jump height calculated from hang time?

h = g × t² ÷ 8. The body rises for half the flight time and falls for the other half.

How do I measure hang time?

Use a jump mat, force plate or slow-motion video — count the time from take-off to landing.

What is a good vertical jump?

Around 40–50 cm is typical for active adult men and 30–40 cm for women; elite basketball players can exceed 75 cm.

How high is a 600 ms jump?

About 44 cm (17.4 inches).

How do I measure jump height without equipment?

Film the jump in slow motion, measure the flight time and enter it here.
